Dr. Herbert L. Kern

Dr. Herbert L. Kern was born in Frankenmuth, Michigan May 2, 1892. He graduated from Concordia Teachers College, Addison, Illinois (which later became Concordia College River Forest and is now known as Concordia University Chicago), and received a call to Immanuel in Bristol, CT September 1, 1912. At first he taught 1st. and 2nd. grades and in 1913 was appointed principal and teacher of the 8th grade. The honorary degree of Doctor Of Laws was bestowed on Mr. Kern by Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, Illinois on June 6, 1958. He retired from teaching September 1, 1958.

In 1915 he married Mary Wunsch of Terryville.

During his lifetime, he served Immanuel as: Secretary; Auditor; Church Extension Fund Representative; Organist; Superintendant of Sunday School

He served the City of Bristol as: Park Commisioner; Trustee, Cemetary Association; Trustee, Bristol Boys' Club; Director, Bristol Girls' Club; Corporator of the Bristol Hospital; Boy Scout Commisioner, Troop #21; Member, City Charter Revision Committee

He served the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod as: Member of the Board Of Appeals Of The Atlantic District

Kern Park in Bristol, Connecticut was named in honor of Dr. Kern.
